Our Vineyards
FROM THE BOWELS OF THE EARTH COME FORTH VINES
The quality of our terroir and the perfect acclimatisation of the different grape varieties are the reasons why La Rioja Alta is considered an indisputable reference point at international level for all lovers of great wines. Our vineyards, located entirely in this part of our province, provide an unrivalled raw material from which our award-winning wines are made.
Our flagship vineyard, La Olagosa, which gives its name to our aged wines, is at the heart of our logistics strategy, conveniently located in San Asensio, the centre of La Rioja Alta.
We have the qualification of two SINGULAR RIOJA VINEYARDS, the highest distinction awarded by the DOCa Rioja in terms of quality standards, ‘FINCA SANTA JULITA’ and ‘FINCA VALDECARRETAS’, two very special vineyards in the San Asensio area (Viura and Tempranillo red respectively).
All of them are integrated in more than 150 hectares of our own vineyards located in the best areas of La Rioja Alta, which allows us to control the total production of the winery.
The vineyards
Vineyards in the towns of Cenicero, Briones, Bañares, Rodezno, Haro,... each one with its own climatic and soil characteristics that provide variety and different character to our products.
After monitoring the grapes in each plot, the grapes are harvested by hand and selectively transported in 10-kilo boxes as soon as possible and with the utmost care to the winery. The care of the vineyard and the obtaining of the grapes require specific and well-defined processes throughout the vegetative cycle. Pruning, spergura, stripping, etc... are tasks carried out by expert and respectful hands so that a pampered life gives us the best of its rewards: a grape of the highest quality for the elaboration of our wines. We also have old vines, more than 60 years old, which produce a small quantity of grapes but of very high quality, optimal for the production of our Perica Oro.
Elaboration
At Perica Wineries we have a wide range of wines, but all of them have a common denominator: quality.
We are in the third generation of the García ‘Perica’ family and time has taught us that there is only one secret to making good wine, and that is that the vineyard and the winery go hand in hand. In La Rioja we say ‘From the earth to the bottle’, so the only secret is to pamper the grapes in the field and refine the wines in the winery.
And it all starts in our more than 150 hectares of our own vineyards, which we look after with our own equipment and winery supervision. It is our raw material, so we have to take great care of it. That's where it all starts.
From planting, pruning, thinning, spergura, etc... all the work we do in the vineyard will mark the destiny of our future wines, so we must put professionalism and care into it.
During the harvesting season, we intensify controls and analyses in order to harvest the grapes at their ideal point. When we consider it is the right moment, we harvest the grapes by hand selection in the field, using special 10-kilo crates that allow the grapes to arrive as healthy and intact as possible, avoiding breakages that could lead to oxidation.
Before entering Perica Wineries, the bunches of grapes pass through the selection table where they are sieved, using mechanical and manual means, in order to keep the best and begin the production of our wines.
Once the grapes are loose, we take them to the vats of 6500 litres of French Allier oak, where we will begin its elaboration. Their journey continues in the winery with fermentation, ageing in barrels and bottles, racking... all without haste, dedicating time to each wine, with care and attention in order to achieve the highest quality.
